What do we think of ourselves? Apart from the fact that we are part and parcel of humanity and that we are social animals. Apart from the fact that we discovered technology and set up various industries, who are we?

Some answers might lead you to believing that we are explorers, discoverers, scientists, creators, innovators and whatnot. But I don’t trust those answers. But if I tell you the right answer to the above question, it will strike you hard.

The answer is, that we are tyrants. Cruel, wicked and even unfit to be called humans. For the destruction that we have brought upon the oceans and the life that call the seas their home, we deserve to be punished.

Who gives us the right to abolish certain species from the face of the earth? Who gives us the liberty to distinguish between species calling them important and unimportant? Who gives us the power to blow up animals with explosives inside their mouths and laugh as we look at it from the side-lines?

The answer is – NOBODY. We have just asserted this authority because we believe that we are much more superior to the other flaura and fauna that reside on this planet. Now while our beliefs are not just morally and ethically wrong, they are indeed impractical too. We talk about us being saviours and messiahs, but I don’t see how that is true when we find the audacity to commit such horrendous sins.

We ought to receive a huge punishment for the injustice carried out to those innocent animals living in the ocean and the ocean is dealing out her revenge in various ways, be it earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, cyclones or even tsunamis. There are 7.8 billion people on this planet and we feel melancholic when even a single one of them passes away. The irony is, however, that scientists have predicted that fish will go extinct within the next thirty years, and we compassionate beings, are still not lifting a finger to go out and protect these poor mortals.

We do a great deal of talking in our schools and colleges, writing accusing letters and staging awareness plays and dramas. But what do all of these amount to? Nothing. And the sad part is, no one cares. We go on with our life and don’t seem to bother about the number of fish declining day by day, minute by minute, second by second. Right now, we are all talk and no words. And if this doesn’t change in the next few years, we can all forget having those ‘delicious’ fish burgers and curries that we can’t resist.

Overfishing and numerous other methods like dynamiting result in huge losses of fish to their respective species and yet, we don’t seem to be moved. Despite all the action taken by people like Greta Thunberg and organizations like Green Peace, we don’t want to get off of our couch and do the tiniest bit of work to protect our fellow residents. Trust me, if we don’t do something right away, the consequences will be dire.

The oceans are baring all the sins of mankind. But soon, very soon in fact, there will be some sort of resistance shown by the majestic oceans. They would’ve had enough of our charades and would now decide to strike back. It is scientifically proven that if we don’t litter in the oceans for five years, they have the ability of cleansing themselves. Amazing right? But which human will not throw trash into the oceans? And five years, heck, I don’t think we can survive for five days without doing so.

We keep littering and don’t allow these oceans to heal again. After every blow, we deal another hefty one, and another hefty one. Because of our unexplained wrath, the consequences are faced by poor seals and walruses. Innocent polar bears and sharks, and most of all, fish. If we don’t act son, believe me, children will read about marine life in history books and would be surprised to even know that there was something called a blue whale. Sounds gripping right?

Well, that’s what will happen. The ocean will fight back. She will come at us will all she has and we won’t amount to anything in front of her majestic prowess. We will have to bow down and accept our heavy sins and accept whatever punishment she deals out. Trust me, you do not want first-hand experience of the ocean’s retaliation.
